Se acerca el cumpleaños de la hija mayor de Juan, y este cree que ella lo ve como un perdedor desde que perdió su trabajo en la obra y la familia ha de sobrevivir, con estrecheces del sueldo de Lola, su mujer, como empleada de hogar. Para recuperar su respeto, decide comprarle un regalo, y para poder hacerlo debe vender la única cosa de valor que le queda: su vieja guitarra eléctrica.
Pero perder la última cosa que le hace feliz, resulta traumático para él, y las cosas no hacen sino empeorar: Juan y Lola discuten y la llegada inoportuna del hermano pequeño de Juan, Pedro, un ácrata que no se pierde ninguna manifestación (a las que acude principalmente para conocer chicas), tampoco ayuda a calmar los ánimos.
The birthday of Juan's oldest daughter is nearing close and he fears that she sees him as a loser since he was fired from his job after the collapse of the building industry and the family has to survive , with difficulties, out of what his wife, Lola, makes as a domestic worker. Willing to regain her respect, Juan decides to buy her a present and, in order to it he must sell the only thing of value left to him: his old electric guitar.
But losing the last thing that makes him happy turns out to be a traumatizing experience and things don't go but downwards: Juan and Lola have a fight over Juan's spoilting the girl, and the untimely arrival of Juan's little brother, Pedro, an anarchist always willing to join the last demonstration (mostly aiming at meeting girls) doesn't help to lighten the mood.
